Dangers Associated with Toothbrush Sharing

Would you take a toothbrush you found out on the street and put it straight into your mouth? Of course not. Unfortunately, if you share a toothbrush with another person, you may be doing the same basic thing.

You should never share a toothbrush, because even if that other person looks like they have a perfectly healthy mouth, any decay they have in their mouth, even if it remains unseen, can be passed along to you.

Keeping Your Mouth Safe

There are a number of things that you can do to keep your mouth safe when a lot of people are around. First, you can keep your toothbrush in a case so you can easily tell which one is yours. Second, never leave it out in a shared bathroom as any debris that flies around could land on your toothbrush, and ultimately, in your mouth. Third, sanitize your toothbrush regularly by placing it in the dishwasher or boiling it for 3-4 minutes, once or twice each week.

If you think your toothbrush has been compromised, you need to get a new one or sanitize the old one. You never want someone else's germs in your mouth, as that can hurt your mouth, even if the other person thinks their mouth is healthy. You only get one set of adult teeth, so do everything you can to protect them by keeping your toothbrush safe.
