Why the Bacteria in Your Mouth Dislikes Vitamin C

If you want to be able to keep the bacteria in your mouth down, you may want to figure out ways of increasing your intake of Vitamin C. Research has found that diets rich in Vitamin C create environments that are not hospitable to the growth of bacteria. The more Vitamin C you get, the less mouth bacteria you will have, and the healthier your mouth is going to be.

Getting More Vitamin C Into Your Diet

You can get a lot of Vitamin C into your diet through the fruits that you eat. Melons are good sources of Vitamin C that aren't too acidic. If you don't really have any other source of acid in your diet, you can also eat citrus fruits. Just make sure you drink a lot of water while you are eating them to minimize the damage the acids are doing to your mouth.

Berries are another great source of Vitamin C. They can be eaten alone as snacks, as part of breakfast, in salads, and even in desserts. These do best if you pair them with something that is going to help protect your teeth, such as yogurt or cheese. That way, the acid is going to do far less damage to your enamel between when you eat them and when you can brush.

Make sure that you are getting enough Vitamin C into your diet, because the bacteria that would otherwise hurt your teeth, are not able to grow. If you want other things that you can do to care for your teeth beyond Vitamin C and great oral hygiene routine, contact our office.
