Cosmetic Dentistry

Two Bellingham WA women who came to see our cosmetic dentist and are happy with the results.

Smile and the Whole World Smiles With You

What's in a smile that makes this saying true?

•  The confidence to display those "pearly whites" in any social situation or professional engagement.
•  The ease to share in a joke without concern for how your teeth look.
•  The assurance that you look your best.

It's easy to take a smile for granted, unless you're self-conscious about yours. In that case, you may spend more time and thought on hiding your smile than enjoying the moment. Natural imperfections, accidental damage, and food stains have always caused embarrassment and social anxiety. Don't dim your smile because of stained, chipped, or crooked teeth. With modern cosmetic dentistry, you can put those days behind you.

Brighten Your Day With a Natural, Healthy, Radiant Smile

Dentistry with Smiles has been restoring luster to teeth and confidence to smiles for over 19 years. In that time, we've had patients come to us with the full spectrum of cosmetic dental issues. From whitening to implants, veneers to bridges, every one of our patients has left our office smiling unabashedly.

Implant Restorations

A dental implant is a post made of metal that is designed to replace missing teeth. It is usually made out of titanium and is placed surgically into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. The restoration uses a post and a crown to closely replicate your missing tooth. Unlike a bridge, an implant is a permanent solution. Read More About Implant Restorations

Porcelain Veneers & Crowns

Tooth veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry technique for creating a beautiful smile. They consist of thin sections of durable porcelain that are custom made for the unique shape of your teeth. A crown is a covering that will wrap and protect the entire surface of a tooth, allowing it to look and function just like the original tooth. Read More About Porcelain Veneers & Crowns

Composite Bonding

Bonding is a procedure where we apply a tooth-colored composite material to a tooth, shape it, allow it to harden and polish it. It can be used in certain situations where a tooth has been damaged or become stained. These are generally minor repairs that can be resolved through this relatively inexpensive means rather than through a more costly dental procedure. Read More About Composite Bonding

Teeth Whitening

Whitening the teeth is one of the easiest and most noticeable changes that you can make to improve the appearance of your smile. Whitening, or bleaching, is a non-invasive and simple dental treatment that will alter the color of your tooth enamel to make your smile look whiter and brighter. Read More About Teeth Whitening

► Implant Restorations
When facing tooth loss or after having experienced a long period where you are missing one or more teeth it can have a real draining effect on your life. Tooth loss directly affects your quality of life in ways that people who have not experienced tooth loss take for granted. At Dentistry with Smiles, we take tooth loss seriously and want our patients to have permanent solutions that they can count on. Dental implants offer a permanent tooth replacement that can restore every facet of a natural tooth to the patient.

What Dental Implants Are

Dental implants are permanent, surgically inserted, tooth replacements that have the ability to support single missing teeth, several missing teeth in a row, and even a full arch of missing teeth. They restore missing teeth in every way. Not only do they look and feel like real teeth, but they also allow you to chew food the same way you would with your natural teeth and they even promote a healthy jaw and oral tissues.

Parts Of A Dental Implant

Dental implants are made up of three main parts – post, abutment, and crown. The post is made of titanium because titanium is a biocompatible metal. When something is said to be “biocompatible” that means that the bone and tissue structures of the body readily accept and integrate (grown around) them.

The second part of the implant is the abutment, which screws into the top of the post and is held there with permanent dental cement. The abutments role is to provide adequate surface area for us to attach the crown permanently.

The crown is the final part of the implant and is made to look just like your natural tooth. The crown can be made from a variety of materials including:
•  Porcelain
•  Porcelain fused to metal
•  Ceramic
•  Ceramic fused to metal
•  Zirconia

Dental Implant Placement Procedure

The first step in any procedure done at our office is to ensure you are comfortable. We will apply topical anesthetics and a numbing agent to make sure that you feel no pain and provide you with any

The post is surgically inserted into the bone in your jaw and allowed to heal. During the healing period the bone in your jaw will grow around the titanium post in a process known as osseointegration. Once it has had some time to heal (sometimes several months), you will return to our office so that we can place the abutment and the crown. Both the abutment and crown will be held in place using permanent dental cement once we find the spot at which they fit perfectly into your bite.

Dental Implants Can Support Full Dentures

More specifically we can place permanent, full arch, tooth replacements on several dental implants and give you back your ability to eat and speak as you did before you lost your teeth. This allows you a tremendous amount of freedom that you wouldn’t get with dentures that must be taken out to eat or sleep.

► Porcelain Veneers & Crowns
Your smile is one of the first things that people see when they look at you, but if you are hiding it due to shame or embarrassment about the appearance of your teeth, you may be holding yourself back without even realizing it. For our patients who may feel insecure about the appearance of their teeth due to discolorations or uneven size or shape, we here at Dentistry with Smiles believe that dental veneers may be exactly what they need to restore both their confidence and improve how their teeth look.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are a type of dental restoration that can greatly benefit many of our patients. They are comprised of a thin sheet of porcelain or composite resin material, which is then affixed directly to the surface of the teeth. Unlike more invasive restoration options, dental veneers can be completed in as few as just two dental appointments, making them a great choice for busy patients who may want lasting results with little fuss or effort.

Dental veneers can help address many different dental concerns that you may have. For instance, for patients who struggle with serious dental stains that have been resistant to whitening, dental veneers can help conceal these stains. They can also help improve the appearance of teeth that are uneven in size or shape, may have uneven gaps or spaces between them, and teeth that have been chipped or broken.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Good candidates for dental veneers are patients who have healthy gums and teeth. An ideal candidate for veneers do not have advanced tooth decay, as we would need to treat the decay first before we could place the veneers. Patients who are missing teeth may also not be a good candidate, as the veneers do need to be attached to your teeth to be fully functional.

We recommend patients who suffer from bruxism (grinding your teeth, especially at night) to be advised of the risks to their veneers if they continue to grind their teeth. A nighttime mouth guard may be necessary to protect the veneers from chipping or breaking as you sleep.

What are the Steps for Getting Veneers?

It typically takes two appointments to get dental veneers. During your first appointment with us, we will start by preparing your teeth for the veneer. We will provide you with local anesthetic to help prevent you from experiencing any discomfort throughout the procedure. We will then shape your tooth by carefully removing a small amount of your enamel. Next, we will take impressions of your teeth, which will go to our lab.

While our lab is creating your permanent veneer, we will fit you with a temporary one. It may take up to two weeks for your veneer to return to us. Once it is finished, we will have you come back for a final fitting of your veneer. We will check to confirm it is a good fit and comfortable in your mouth, then we will bond it to your teeth with dental cement. Finally, we will cure it with a special ultraviolet light to ensure that it is secure and durable.

Just because you have dental veneers does not mean that you can start neglecting your teeth. You will need to maintain your veneers by practicing good oral hygiene and avoiding anything that can cause them to break or chip (such as biting down on hard foods or candies). We also recommend that you continue to schedule regular checkups (every six months) with us.

► Composite Bonding
Bellingham, WA man with perfect teeth due to composite dental bonding.Chips, stains, and uneven teeth are simply a fact of life for some people. However, just because you may be struggling with unattractive blemishes on your teeth does not mean that you have to endure this problem forever. The fact is, many people struggle with similar cosmetic and structural concerns on their teeth. That is why we here at Dentistry with Smiles are happy to offer composite bonding to our patients, allowing them to attain the beautiful, bright, even smile that they have always desired.

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is one of the simplest, most straightforward ways that you can improve the appearance of your teeth. Made up of a special type of material (a type of composite resin blend that is typically a combination of plastic and glass), composite bonding is used in many different applications. The specific types of materials that we use in our composite bonding material allow it to closely resemble an actual tooth, making it an attractive restoration option for our patients.

Who Will Benefit from Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a great option for many people. We generally recommend it for a wide variety of both cosmetic and restorative dental concerns. For instance, composite bonding is a fantastic choice for patients who may have teeth that are chipped, stained, cracked, or uneven in size or shape. Patients who have a receding gumline can also benefit from composite bonding. It can also improve the appearance of gaps or spaces between your teeth, as well.

How is Composite Bonding Applied?

A procedure to apply composite bonding material is very simple and straightforward and can be completed in as little as a half hour. Often, our patients do not even require anesthetic before we proceed with placing the composite bonding material. However, if it is being used in an area that has tooth decay (a cavity), we may need to numb the area before we proceed.

During your appointment, we will begin by preparing the site for the bonding. This includes making sure we have a perfect color match for your surrounding teeth. Next, we will prepare the tooth to receive the bonding material. This includes etching the tooth phosphoric acid to help the composite bonding to adhere better.

Our next step includes placing the composite bonding material directly to the tooth and carefully shaping it. We will then smooth it and make sure it fits well inside your mouth. Once we are completely satisfied with our work, we will then cure the composite bonding material with a UV light to make sure it is hard and durable. Finally, we will buff and smooth it, so that it looks and feels just like a real tooth.

Aftercare

It is important to take good care of your teeth, especially after getting composite bonding. This material can be brittle and may chip if you are not careful. Avoid biting down on hard objects (such as ice or hard candies) and avoid biting your nails or chewing on ink pen lids, for instance.

If you would like to learn more about the benefits of composite bonding, or you are interested in setting up an appointment with us here at Dentistry with Smiles, please give us a call today at (360) 312-3187!

► Teeth Whitening

Think of the last time you noticed how nice someone’s teeth looked and you will probably realize that it was because of ho stunningly white they were. Teeth whitening is easily the most popular procedure in all of cosmetic dentistry for a good reason. Everyone notices beautiful, white teeth! Teeth whitening is popular because it makes a huge difference and it takes so little time to achieve a brilliant, white smile. At Dentistry with Smiles we offer professional teeth whitening options that are fast, effective, and safe.

Why You Should Consider Teeth Whitening

As it turns out, having white teeth is the biggest aesthetic concern of American dental patients because it’s the easiest way to improve your smile vastly. No serious alteration of your teeth needs to happen, just a little sprucing up and you are ready to go! No need to reshape of physically alter your teeth.

What You Can Accomplish With Tooth Whitening

We can tackle a wide variety of issues with professional teeth whitening. Coloration and staining issues that are hard to treat with over-the-counter products and treatment methods are a breeze for us here at Dentistry with Smiles. Some of the issues that we can treat with our whitening solutions include:
•  Yellow or brown teeth
•  Teeth stained by coffee, wine, or tea
•  Medications that stain teeth like tetracycline
•  Teeth that have worn down and lack enamel
•  Fluorosis, or whit marks on teeth

Over-The-Counter Solutions Can’t Compare To Professional Whitening

Everyone has had that moment in the dental care aisle where we are faced with the question of, “Does this OTC teeth whitening stuff really work?” More often than not the answer is that it does work, but painfully slowly and not to the point that you notice a change in the shade of your teeth. What you will notice with OTC whitening products is an increased sensitivity to hot and cold substances and maybe a little bit of frustration that your teeth aren’t whiter.

Professional Teeth Whitening Offers Options and Results

We understand that one solution doesn’t necessarily fit everyone’s lifestyle, so we offer a few different teeth whitening solutions.

Our most popular whitening solution is in-office teeth whitening which allows us to whiten your teeth as much or as little as you would like in roughly an hour. There are a few different methods that we can use in-office depending on the variety of the staining and how many shades you would like to whiten your teeth.

We also offer a take-home whitening method. We will craft some trays that are custom made to fit your smile, and give you a whitening solution to place in the trays. You will need to wear the trays for roughly an hour at a time, one to two times a day. This can take anywhere from a week to a month of two depending on how white you would like your teeth.

Keep Your Teeth Whiter For Longer

Remember, the best way to keep your smile looking fabulous is to avoid foods that can stain them or wear away at your enamel. The biggest teeth strainers include:
•  Coffee
•  Tea
•  Soda
•  Wine
•  Deeply colored fruits
•  Acidic foods

To learn more about how to whiten your teeth fast and effectively, call us today at (360) 312-3187.
