What is Composite Bonding?


Composite bonding is one of the simplest, most straightforward ways that you can improve the appearance of your teeth. Made up of a special type of material (a type of composite resin blend that is typically a combination of plastic and glass), composite bonding is used in many different applications. The specific types of materials that we use in our composite bonding material allow it to closely resemble an actual tooth, making it an attractive restoration option for our patients.

Who Will Benefit from Composite Bonding?


Composite bonding is a great option for many people. We generally recommend it for a wide variety of both cosmetic and restorative dental concerns. For instance, composite bonding is a fantastic choice for patients who may have teeth that are chipped, stained, cracked, or uneven in size or shape. Patients who have a receding gumline can also benefit from composite bonding. It can also improve the appearance of gaps or spaces between your teeth, as well.

How is Composite Bonding Applied?


A procedure to apply composite bonding material is very simple and straightforward and can be completed in as little as a half hour. Often, our patients do not even require anesthetic before we proceed with placing the composite bonding material. However, if it is being used in an area that has tooth decay (a cavity), we may need to numb the area before we proceed.

During your appointment, we will begin by preparing the site for the bonding. This includes making sure we have a perfect color match for your surrounding teeth. Next, we will prepare the tooth to receive the bonding material. This includes etching the tooth phosphoric acid to help the composite bonding to adhere better.

Our next step includes placing the composite bonding material directly to the tooth and carefully shaping it. We will then smooth it and make sure it fits well inside your mouth. Once we are completely satisfied with our work, we will then cure the composite bonding material with a UV light to make sure it is hard and durable. Finally, we will buff and smooth it, so that it looks and feels just like a real tooth.

Aftercare


It is important to take good care of your teeth, especially after getting composite bonding. This material can be brittle and may chip if you are not careful. Avoid biting down on hard objects (such as ice or hard candies) and avoid biting your nails or chewing on ink pen lids, for instance.
